If you end up deciding to jump right into the flex shaft, you will also need to invest in a flex shaft stand to hang the motor above your work surface. This is important - we want for the shaft portion to come down into our hand in a gentle, curving arc as opposed to falling in a loop that swoops way below our work surface. This gentle curve will keep the mechanism inside the shaft from creating wear on the shaft itself, thereby increasing the life of the whole unit.
Depending on your workspace setup, you can get stands that attach directly to your table OR stands that clamp. I used a clamp for many years, as my studio space grew and changed, but ultimately ended up switching to a direct mount model (the black post pictured here) because it felt sturdier to me!
